The Capital city of the United Kingdom. London is the largest City in Europe stretching over 50km (30 miles) across and covering an area of more than 620 square miles. Population is around 7 million. Visitor numbers continue to boom with 24 million registered in 1995.
Ethnically it is Europes most diverse metropolis with around 200 hundred languages spoken within its confines and more than 30 % of the population is made up of 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants. |

| London is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in winter, but from late March until late October British Summer Time (BST i.e. GNT + 1) operates.L |
| MONEY |
The currency in London is the British Pound (£) issued in notes of £5, £10, £20, and £50. There are 100 pennies or pence (p) to each pound and coins come in denominations of 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2. Travellers cheques may be accepted by some hotels, shops and restaurants and those in pounds are most convenient. Credit cards are accepted in most places but you should always check.
The Visa and Mastercard are the most common.
Banks and Major Travel agents like American Express and Thomas Cook will exchange cash or cheques. There are also numerous Bureau de Changes. |
| OPENING HOURS |
Banks are usually open from 0930 until 1530, Monday to Friday. Some branches are open on Saturday morning.
Shops are generally open from 0930 until 1730 but some may not open until 1000. In larger areas some shops will have a late night opening and also some shopping malls and larger shopping may be open on Sunday but you need to check for opening hours outside the Monday to Friday core times. |

London has an extensive bus and underground rail
system. For economical and convenience a Travelcard allows unlimited travel
within specified zones. Black taxis can be hailed in any street and the fare is
clearly shown on the meter.

Speed limits on motorways and dual carriageways is 70mph (112kph), on main roads 50-60mph(80-100kph), built up areas is 30-40mph (50-65kph).
Seatbelts must be worn in front seats at all times and in rear seats when fitted.
